Abba John recounted what one of the Elders had seen in an ec­static vision: 

“Behold, three monks were standing on the opposite shore of the sea. There came to them a voice from the other side, which said: ‘Take up flaming wings and come to me.’ Two of them took up flaming wings and flew to the other side; the other stayed and shed many tears, and cried aloud. 

He eventually took up, not fiery wings, but weak and powerless ones. He toiled, sinking and rising again, finally, after much toil, reaching the other side. So it is with this generation: Although it takes up wings, they are not flaming, but utterly weak and powerless.”
